The Emotionally Healthy Church Part 3
Apr 27, 2014
Last week's application
- Perspective: Does God hold your past, present, and future?
- Community Praxis: Begin to practice emotional vulnerability.
Big Idea - Jesus is the perfect display of emotional health.
Why do emotions make us so uncomfortable?
1. Jesus embraced the grief of His life
Isaiah 53:3-4 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; He was despised, and we didn't value Him. Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
A grieved world requires lament. Anything less is ignorance and denial.
Matthew 5:4 Those who mourn are blessed, for they will be comforted.
We need to allow ourselves to mourn.
2. Jesus didn't suppress His anger
Isaiah 63:1-6 Who is this coming from Edom in crimson-stained garments from Bozrah - this One who is splendid in His apparel, rising up proudly in His great might? It is I, proclaiming vindication, powerful to save. Why are Your clothes red, and Your garments like one who treads a winepress? I trampled the winepress alone, and no one from the nations was with Me. I trampled them in My anger and ground them underfoot in My fury; their blood spattered My garments, and all My clothes were stained. For I planned the day of vengeance, and the year of My redemption came. I looked, but there was no one to help, and I was amazed that no one assisted; so My arm accomplished victory for Me, and My wrath assisted Me. I crushed nations in My anger; I made them drunk with My wrath and poured out their blood on the ground.
3. Jesus felt the emotions of those around Him.
John 11:28-37 Having said this, she went back and called her sister Mary, saying in private, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." As soon as she heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him. Jesus had not yet come into the village but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. The Jews who were with her in the house consoling her saw that Mary got up quickly and went out. So they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to cry there. When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and told Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died! " When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, He was angry in His spirit and deeply moved. "Where have you put him? " He asked. "Lord," they told Him, "come and see." Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how He loved him! " But some of them said, "Couldn't He who opened the blind man's eyes also have kept this man from dying? "
