1 John 4:1-3
Feb 1, 2015
1 John 4:1-3 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. But every spirit who does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist; you have heard that he is coming, and he is already in the world now.
Big Idea - Anything contrary to the Gospel of truth is anti-Christ.
1 John 2:9 The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 1 John 3:10 This is how God's children - and the Devil's children - are made evident. Whoever does not do what is right is not of God, especially the one who does not love his brother. 1 John 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers. The one who does not love remains in death. 1 John 4:8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
1. We must be wise regarding the teachings we listen to.
1 John 4:1 James 3:1-5 Not many should become teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive a stricter judgment, for we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a mature man who is also able to control his whole body. Now when we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we also guide the whole animal. And consider ships: Though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So too, though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things. Consider how large a forest a small fire ignites.
2. Any teaching that contradicts Jesus as the Messiah, His human nature, and/or His deity is not the truth.
1 John 2:22 Who is the liar, if not the one who denies that Jesus is the Messiah? This one is the antichrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. 1 John 4:2-3a This is how you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. But every spirit who does not confess Jesus is not from God.
3. The before-mentioned teachings are from the spirit of the Antichrist.
1 John 4:3b This is the spirit of the antichrist; you have heard that he is coming, and he is already in the world now.
